Relational Reality : New Discoveries of Interrelatedness That Are Transforming the Modern World

Description

RELATIONAL REALITY reveals the coherence among numerous surprising discoveries, most made since 2004, about the interrelated nature of physical reality. These discoveries are now transforming every mainstream field of human endeavor, as basic assumptions (built on the old idea that everything in the physical world is essentially separate and functions mechanistically) are being reconsidered. No longer a marginal perspective, the Relational Shift is based on the realization that all entities in this world, including humans, are thoroughly relational beings of great complexity who are both composed of and nested within networks of creative, dynamic interrelationships. Nothing exists outside of those relationships. As we try to grasp the interrelated nature of reality, emergent relational approaches are already transforming the way we educate our children, attend to our health, green our communities, and rethink economic activity. New analyses of the crises of modernity and abundant new solutions are the result. "A vital book." -- Bill McKibben CONTENTS: Ch. 1: Relational Revelations; Ch. 2: The Relational Shift in Education and Parenting; Ch. 3: The Relational Shift in Health and Healthcare; Ch. 4: The Relational Shift in Community Design and Architecture; Ch. 5: The Relational Shift in the Economy; Ch. 6: Stepping Up

The College and University Counseling Manual : Integrating Essential Services Across the Campus

Description

Campus counselling services today must face the challenges of greater diversity and complexity on campus while making do with fewer resources. In order to be maximally effective, they must be willing to engage with other services within and beyond the campus itself. This comprehensive manual for campus mental health and student affairs professionals is specifically designed to provide the most current information available regarding critical issues impacting the mental health and educational experiences of today's college students. It is unique in its focus on outreach beyond the walls of the counselling centre and how counselling services can coordinate their efforts with other on and off-campus institutions to expand their reach and provide optimal services. Written for both mental health counsellors and administrators, the text addresses ethical and legal issues, campus outreach, crisis and trauma services, substance abuse, sexual minorities, spiritual and religious issues, bullying and aggression, web-based counselling, and pychoeducational services. The authors of this text distill their expertise from more than 30 years of combined experience working and teaching in a variety of college and university counselling centres throughout the U.S. The book serves as both a comprehensive text for courses in college counselling and college student affairs and services, as well as an all-inclusive manual for all college and university mental health and student affairs professionals.

Notes on Dynamical Systems

Description

This book is an introduction to the field of dynamical systems, in particular, to the special class of Hamiltonian systems. The authors aimed at keeping the requirements of mathematical techniques minimal but giving detailed proofs and many examples and illustrations from physics and celestial mechanics. After all, the celestial $N$-body problem is the origin of dynamical systems and gave rise in the past to many mathematical developments. Jurgen Moser (1928-1999) was a professor at the Courant Institute, New York, and then at ETH Zurich. He served as president of the International Mathematical Union and received many honors and prizes, among them the Wolf Prize in mathematics. Jurgen Moser is the author of several books, among them "Stable and Random Motions in Dynamical Systems". Eduard Zehnder is a professor at ETH Zurich. He is coauthor with Helmut Hofer of the book "Symplectic Invariants and Hamiltonian Dynamics".

Stuart Patton: Milk : Its Remarkable Contribution to Human Health and Well-Being

Milk : Its Remarkable Contribution to Human Health and Well-Being

Description

Milk is the one food that sustains life and promotes growth in all newborn mammals, including the human infant. By its very nature, milk is nutritious. Despite this, it has received surprisingly little attention from those interested in the cultural impact of food. In this fascinating volume, Stuart Patton convincingly argues that milk has become of such importance and has so many health and cultural implications that everyone should have a basic understanding of it. This book provides this much-needed introduction. Patton's approach to his subject is comprehensive. He begins with how milk is made in the lactating cell, and proceeds to the basics of cheese making and ice cream manufacture. He also gives extensive consideration to human milk, including breasts, lactation, and infant feeding. Pro and con arguments about the healthfulness of cows' milk are discussed at length and with documentation. Patton explores the growing gap between the public's impressions of milk, and known facts about milk and dairy foods. He argues that the layperson's understanding of milk has deteriorated as a result of propaganda from activists anxious to destroy milk's favorable image, misinformation in the media, and scare implications from medical research hypotheses.

The most riveting political biography of our time, Robert A. Caro's life of Lyndon B. Johnson, continues. Master of the Senate takes Johnson's story through one of its most remarkable periods: his twelve years, from 1949 through 1960, in the United States Senate. Once the most august and revered body in politics, by the time Johnson arrived the Senate had become a parody of itself and an obstacle that for decades had blocked desperately needed liberal legislation. Caro shows how Johnson's brilliance, charm, and ruthlessness enabled him to become the youngest and most powerful Majority Leader in history and how he used his incomparable legislative genius -seducing both Northern liberals and Southern conservatives -to pass the first Civil Rights legislation since Reconstruction. Brilliantly weaving rich detail into a gripping narrative, Caro gives us both a galvanizing portrait of Johnson Authority Control in Organizing and Accessing Information : Definition and International Experience download PDF himself and a definitive and revelatory study of the workings of legislative power.

Composed in the early thirteenth century, Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival is the re-creation and completion of the story left unfinished by its initiator Chretien de Troyes. It A Massage Therapist's Guide to Understanding, Locating and Treating Myofascial Trigger Points download book follows Parzival from his boyhood and career as a knight in the court of King Arthur to his ultimate achievement as King of the Temple of the Grail, which Wolfram describes as a life-giving Stone. As a knight serving the German nobility in the imperial Hohenstauffen period, the author was uniquely placed to describe the zest and colour of his hero's world, with dazzling depictions of courtly luxury, jousting and adventure. Yet this is not simply a tale of chivalry, but an epic quest for spiritual education, as Parzival must conquer his ignorance and pride and learn humility before he can finally win the Holy Grail.

Bob Lingard,Fazal Rizvi: Globalizing Education Policy

Globalizing Education Policy

Description

Rizvi and Lingard's account of the global politics of education is thoughtful, complex and compelling. It is the first really comprehensive discussion and analysis of global trends in education policy, their effects - structural and individual - and resistance to them. In the enormous body of writing on globalisation this book stands out and will become a basic text in education policy courses around the world. - Stephen J Ball, Karl Mannheim Professor of Sociology of Education, Institute of Education, University of London, UK In what ways have the processes of globalization reshaped the educational policy terrain? How might we analyse education policies located within this new terrain, which is at once local, national, regional and global? In Globalizing Education Policy, the authors explore the key global drivers of policy change in education, and suggest that these do not operate in the same way in all nation-states. They examine the transformative effects of globalization on the discursive terrain within which educational policies are developed and enacted, arguing that this terrain is increasingly informed by a range of neo-liberal precepts which have fundamentally changed the ways in which we think about educational governance. They also suggest that whilst in some countries these precepts are resisted, to some extent, they have nonetheless become hegemonic, and provide an overview of some critical issues in educational policy to which this hegemonic view of globalization has given rise, including: * devolution and decentralization * new forms of governance * the balance between public and private funding of education * access and equity and the education of girls * curriculum particularly with respect to the teaching of English language and technology * pedagogies and high stakes testing * and the global trade in education. These issues are explored within the context of major shifts in global processes and ideological discourses currently being experienced, and negotiated by all countries. The book also provides an approach to education policy analysis in an age of globalization and will be of interest to those studying globalization and education policy across the social sciences.

Through the personal story of Yasmin's family and the food and Globalizing Education Policy free ebook recipes they've shared together, "The Settler's Cookbook" tells the history of Indian migration to the UK via East Africa. Her family was part of the mass exodus from India to East Africa during the height of British imperial expansion, fleeing famine and lured by the prospect of prosperity under the empire. In 1972, expelled from Uganda by Idi Amin, they moved to the UK, where Yasmin has made her home with an Englishman. The food she cooks now combines the traditions and tastes of her family's hybrid history. Here you'll discover how Shepherd's Pie is much enhanced by sprinkling in some chilli, Victoria sponge can be enlivened by saffron and lime, and the addition of ketchup to a curry can be life-changing. What mysteries lurk in the depths of a glass of water? What makes the wispy clouds of vapour rising from your cup of hot coffee? Or the puffy white clouds hovering in the sky? Why do bubbles in your fizzy drinks get bigger the longer you wait? What keeps Jelly's water from oozing out? Why does your tongue stick to something frozen? Professor Pollack takes us on a fantastic voyage through water, showing us a hidden universe teeming with physical activity, providing cogent explanations to many of waters long-held secrets. In conversational prose, Pollack exposes where some scientists may have gone wrong, and instead lays a simple foundation for understanding how changes of water structure underlie most energetic transitions of form and motion on Earth. This seminal work, peppered with whimsical illustrations and simple diagrams invites us to open our eyes and re-experience our natural world, to take nothing for granted, and to reawaken our childhood dream of having things make sense.

Ellen Kushner: Thomas the Rhymer

Thomas the Rhymer

Description

A minstrel lives by his words, his tunes, and sometimes by his lies. But when the bold and gifted young Thomas the Rhymer awakens the desire of the powerful Queen of Elfland, he finds that words are not enough to keep him from his fate. As the Queen sweeps him far from the people he has known and loved into her realm of magic, opulence - and captivity - he learns at last what it is to be truly human. When he returns to his home with the Queen's parting gift, his great task will be to seek out the girl he loved and wronged, and offer her at last the tongue that cannot lie. Award-winning author Ellen Kushner's inspired retelling of an ancient legend weaves myth and magic into a vivid contemporary novel about the mysteries of the human heart. Brimming with ballads, riddles, and magical transformations, here is the timeless tale of a charismatic bard whose talents earn him a two-edged otherworldly gift.

The power of art as a transformative path is the theme of this inspiring collection from internationally known artist Alex Grey. "Art Psalms "combines poems, artwork, and "mystic rants" that fuse imagination, creativity, and spirituality. Grey's oracular poetry declares that art, both its creation and its observation, can be a spiritual practice. Thomas the Rhymer download ebook pdf Many of these writings have been shared at gatherings worldwide, especially at New York City's Chapel of Sacred Mirrors (CoSM), a contemporary sacred space co-founded by Alex and Allyson Grey. Selections include "Soul Marriage," which invites the reader to commit to personal and global transformation; "Guidance for Servants of God," precepts for life as a sacred path; and "The Plan," which aligns universal and individual creativity. The entire text of Grey's spoken word performance, "WorldSpirit," is included here. Three annotated portfolios, "Meditations on the Divine Feminine," "Meditations on the Masters," and "Meditations on Mortality," explore the connection between drawing and meditation as ways of seeing. Equally meaningful for art lovers, the health and spiritual communities, and anyone seeking to develop their creativity, "Art Psalms "features over 150 new reproductions of drawings, paintings, and sacred geometry to enrich and awaken the inner artist in each of us.

The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto

Description

Mitch Albom creates his most unforgettable fictional character-Frankie Presto, the greatest guitarist to ever walk the earth-in this magical novel about the bands we join in life and the power of talent to change our lives. In his most stunning novel yet, the voice of Music narrates the tale of its most beloved disciple, young Frankie Presto, a war orphan raised by a blind music teacher in a small Spanish town. At nine years old, Frankie is sent to America in the bottom of a boat. His only possession is an old guitar and six precious strings. But Frankie's talent is touched by the gods, and his amazing journey weaves him through the musical landscape of the 20th century, from classical to jazz to rock and roll, with his stunning talent affecting numerous stars along the way, including Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Carole King, Wynton Marsalis and even KISS. Frankie becomes a pop star himself. He makes records. He is adored. But his gift is also his burden, as he realizes, through his music, he can actually affect people's futures-with one string turning blue whenever a life is altered. At the height of his popularity, Frankie Presto vanishes. His legend grows. Only decades later, does he reappear-just before his spectacular death-to change one last life. With its Forest Gump -like romp through the music world, The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto is a classic in the making. A lifelong musician himself, Mitch Albom delivers a remarkable novel, infused with the message that "everyone joins a band in this life" and those connections change us all.

Not so very long ago, Eragon - Shadeslayer, Dragon Rider - was nothing more than a poor farm boy, and his dragon, Saphira, only a blue stone in the forest. Now, the fate of an entire civilization rests on their shoulders. Long months of training and battle have brought victories and hope, but they have also brought heartbreaking loss. And still, the real battle lies ahead: they must confront Galbatorix. When they do, they will have to be strong enough to defeat him. And if they cannot, no one can. There will be no second chances. The Rider and his dragon have come farther than anyone dared to hope. But can they topple the evil king and restore justice to Alagaesia? And if so, at what cost? Easter Egg hunting with Spot! The Eternals, immortals with phenomenal powers and created by the more than god-like beings known as the Celestials. When medical student mark Curry is approached by a man with strange golden The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto free ebook eyes and told that he is an Eternal, events are set in motion that force mark to question everything he's ever believed. Cities of the Classical World: An Atlas and Gazetteer of 120 Centres of Ancient Civilization

Description

From Alexandria to York, this unique illustrated guide allows us to see the great centres of classical civilization afresh. The key feature of Cities of the Classical World is 120 specially drawn maps tracing each city's thoroughfares and defences, monuments and places of worship. Every map is to the same scale, allowing readers for the first time to appreciate visually the relative sizes of Babylon and Paris, London and Constantinople. There is also a clear, incisive commentary on each city's development, strategic importance, rulers and ordinary inhabitants. This compelling and elegant atlas opens a new window on to the ancient world, and will transform the way we see it.

One of the biggest questions of the financial crisis has not been answered until now. What happened at Lehman Brothers and why was it allowed to fail, with aftershocks that rocked the global economy? In this news-making, often astonishing book, a former Lehman Brothers Vice President gives us the straight answers--right from the belly of the beast. With the planned withdrawal of US troops from Iraq and Afghanistan, the longest conflicts in our nation's history were supposed to end. Yet we remain at war against expanding terrorist movements, and our security forces have had to continually adapt to a nihilistic foe that operates in the shadows. The result of fifteen years of reporting, Twilight Warriors is the untold story of the tight-knit brotherhood that changed the way America fights. James Kitfield reveals how brilliant innovators in the US military, Special Forces, and the intelligence and law enforcement communities forged close operational bonds in the crucibles of Iraq and Afghanistan, breaking down institutional barriers to create a relentless, Cities of the Classical World: An Atlas and Gazetteer of 120 Centres of Ancient Civilization download PDF intelligence-driven style of operations. At the forefront of this profound shift were Stanley McChrystal and his interagency team at Joint Special Operations Command, the pioneers behind a hybrid method of warfighting: find, fix, finish, exploit, and analyze.

Jane Austen,Tony Tanner,Ros Ballaster: Sense and Sensibility

Sense and Sensibility

Description

Sense and Sensibility is Jane Austen's first published work, meticulously constructed and sparkling with her unique wit. This Penguin Classics edition is edited with an introduction by Ros Ballaster, University of Oxford Marianne Dashwood wears her heart on her sleeve, and when she falls in love with the dashing but unsuitable John Willoughby she ignores her sister Elinor's warning that her impulsive behaviour leaves her open to gossip and innuendo. Meanwhile Elinor, always sensitive to social convention, is struggling to conceal her own romantic disappointment, even from those closest to her. Through their parallel experience of love - and its threatened loss - the sisters learn that sense must mix with sensibility if they are to find personal happiness in a society where status and money govern the rules of love. This edition also includes explanatory notes and textual variants between first and second edition. Jane Austen (1775-1817) was extremely modest about her own genius but has become one of English literature's most famous women writers. Austen began writing at a young age, embarking on what is possibly her best-known work, Pride and Prejudice, at the age of 22. She was the author of Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Persuasion, Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey.

Shaun's a man lacking direction. Happy to sit around his filthy flat with his filthy flatmate Ed, his vision rarely extends further than the pub. But when Liz, his girlfriend, leaves him - and Britain is swept by a devastating plague of zombies - there's only one thing to do: get the girl, kill the zombies, and save the Sense and Sensibility download ebook day! In "The Sacred Network," Chris Hardy shows how the world's sacred sites coincide with the intersections of energetic waves from the earth's geomagnetic field and how--via their megaliths, temples, and steeples--these sites act as antennae for the energies of the cosmos. Delving deeply in to Paris's sacred network, she also explores the intricate geometrical patterns created by the alignments of churches and monuments, such as pentagrams and Stars of David. Revealing that consciousness is a tangible energy, she explains how the sacred network is fueling an 8,000-year evolutionary cycle initiated by our megalithic ancestors that will soon culminate in a new state of shared consciousness for humanity.
